Gulmarg, known as “Gulmarag” in Kashmiri (which translates to “meadow of flowers”), is a captivating destination in the Kashmir Valley.
Apharwat Peak
Located 13 kilometers away from Gulmarg, Apharwat Peak stands at
an impressive 13,500 feet. These snow-covered slopes are the
longest and highest ski slopes in Asia, attracting skiing
enthusiasts from around the world. To reach the peak, visitors can
take the Gondola, a cable car service that operates in two levels.
The Gondola lifts passengers through a height of 1,330 meters,
covering nearly 5 kilometers to reach level two at 3,980 meters on
Apharwat Peak. Skiing is possible in both northwest and southeast
directions, catering to different skill levels. For a more
leisurely experience, explore the slopes from level one or enjoy
horse riding around Lake Alpather.
Gulmarg Skiing:
Gulmarg, part of the Pir Panjals
Himalayan range, receives heavy snowfall, making it a favorite ski
area for both foreign and local residents. The skiing area
includes gondola terrain, lower tree skiing areas, and poma
terrain within the town. Adventurous skiers can explore the old
fir and pine trees, while heli-ski runs from great heights are
also possible. Besides skiing, visitors can enjoy snowboarding,
tobogganing, snow scooters, and snow bobbing. Notable sites in the
region include Imambara Goom, Alpather Lake, St. Mary’s Church,
Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve, Baba Reshi Shrine, and the golf course.
Gulmarg remains attractive year-round, but skiing in winter adds
an extra layer of fun.
Golf Course
Situated at an elevation of 2,650 meters above sea level, Gulmarg
boasts the world’s highest green golf course. Managed by the Jammu
and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation, this 18-hole golf
course offers temporary memberships for golfers. The slopes and
inclines of the course create a challenging yet scenic golfing
experience. Originally established by the British as a holiday
resort, the Gulmarg golf course has a rich history. The first Golf
Championship was organized here in 1922.
Khilanmarg
Just 4 kilometers from the Gulmarg bus stop, Khilanmarg is
accessible by walking across the valley meadows. Surrounded by
mountains, this area blooms with wildflowers during spring.
Tourists can soak in panoramic views of Nanga Parbat, the
Himalayas, and the twin peaks of Nun and Kun.
Kongdori Cable Car (Gondola):
Experience the thrill
of riding the world's highest cable car. The Gondola operates in
two phases: PHASE 1 and PHASE 2. Each small yellow cabin
accommodates six adults and moves continuously along high tensile
strength cables. Enjoy stunning vistas of the Kashmir landscapes
as you embark and disembark at the two stops.
