Golfing in Kashmir

Golf tourism is a major draw in the Kashmir Valley during the summer months. The peak season for golfing in Kashmir spans from April through November. One distinct advantage of playing golf here, compared to other courses, is the refreshing weather and the shade provided by the bordering Chinar and Pine trees, allowing for extended play.

Kashmir offers a unique golfing experience amidst picturesque surroundings, where gentle breezes rustle through expansive chinar and majestic pine trees. In the lush greens of Srinagar and Gulmarg, golfers enjoy extended play hours thanks to the cooler temperatures—Srinagar rarely exceeding 35°C in summer. This temperate climate allows for year-round golfing in Srinagar, contrasting sharply with the scorching plains. During winter, courses in Srinagar are closed due to snowfall.

Gulmarg's course stands unparalleled globally, situated at 2,650 meters above sea level, making it the highest green golf course in the world. Established in 1911 as a retreat by the British, its layout with a par of 72 features dramatic slopes and inclines throughout. The historic Gulmarg Golf Club, originally a 6-hole course dating back to 1890-91, hosted its first championship in 1922 and continues to attract golfers with its unique challenges.

From December to April, Gulmarg's course transforms into ski slopes, while golf sets can be rented from certified pros during the golfing season. Recent renovations aim to enhance the course, relocating several greens and tees.

The Royal Spring Golf Course at Chashma Shahi, nestled against the backdrop of the Zabarwan Mountains, offers a scenic retreat. Initially developed around natural springs admired by Mughal Emperor Jehangir, the course is a blend of natural beauty and sporting challenge.

Pahalgam's golf course, located at 2,400 meters amidst snow-capped peaks and dense pine forests, was upgraded from 9 to 18 holes. Known for its high-altitude setting and panoramic views, it hosts local and state championships, providing facilities like caddies and equipment rental.

In Jammu, the International Standard 18-hole Golf Course at Sidhra by the River Tawi showcases meticulous design and modern amenities like automated sprinklers and golf carts. Opened in 2011 to boost tourism, it spans 81 hectares with diverse landscapes, including lakes and native forests, offering a challenging yet scenic golfing experience.

These diverse courses across Kashmir cater to both leisure golfers and professionals, set against stunning natural backdrops that enhance the golfing experience.
